Survey This is how many Americans would consider relocating for a job

Survey This is how many Americans would consider relocating for a jobSurvey This is how many Americans would consider relocating for a jobThe saying goes, theres no place like home. But it doesnt seem to ring true for 62% of U.S. workers, who would consider moving to a different location for a job.Though almost two-thirds of Americans may already seem like a hefty chunk of the population, those numbers skyrocket for younger adults 76% of workers aged 18-34 would relocate, compared to only 40% of those older than 55. Theres also a gender discrepancy - 67% of men say theyd move, compared to 59% of women. These numbers come from a survey out of specialized staffing firm Robert Half and was conducted by independent research firms that surveyed more than 2,800 U.S. workers who report to office environments and more than 2,800 senior managers in 28 major U.S. cities. So why are so many people ready to pack their bags and leave?Well, according to the research, 44% of people list better pay o r perks as the top factor in whether they move for a job. 17% make their decisions based on family or personal reasons, while 16% count cost of living or career advancement as their major influencers. For a further 6%, weather weighs heavy on their choice.Regions also seem to play a big role in terms of whos willing to relocate. There are some cities that are hard to leave, and others where thats well less true. Workers in Raleigh, Miami, Des Moines, Charlotte, Los Angeles an, Seattle are the most willing to consider relocating for a job. Meanwhile, people in Minneapolis, Philadelphia, Boston, Detroit, and Atlanta want to stay put (As someone who has lived in Philly, I can tell you why - its all about the food). As employers search for qualified candidates beyond their geographic area, theyre also adapting to provide the best applicants with relocation packages. 34% of companies have increased such benefits in the last five years. But that doesnt mean everyones bent on recruiting outside talent - 30% of companies still dont offer any sort of relocation package.Would you move for a new job? And if so, what would your top considerations be when deciding whether to relocate? While the answer may be a little different for all of us, it seems theres an openness to exploring new horizons - and thats exciting

Employee Benefits Communication is Vital to Participation

Employee Benefits Communication is Vital to ParticipationEmployee Benefits Communication is Vital to ParticipationHuman resource and benefits professionals spend a great deal of their time trying to secure the best possible employee benefits and compensation for their people. But it can be difficult to get employees onboard without a strong benefits communication process. A benefits communication policy should be part of every workplace for a number of reasons. It gives an overview of the benefits offered to employees and their families, and it provides vital information about when and how to enroll in coverages. Finally, it ensures that employees stay up-to-date on important changes and improvements to their benefits packages. Benefits and Job Satisfaction The Society for Human Resource Management found in a 2018 survey that 29% of employees felt that their benefits or the lack of them were sufficient reason to look for work elsewhere. A significant 92% said that benefits were c ritical to job satisfaction. Its clear that a strong employee benefits program can produce great results, like employee retention and a more effective workforce. The best benefit of a communication policy is total awareness of company compensation or a total compensation program. Education should be at the heart of this. A benefits communication plan isnt just something to focus on during the annual open enrollment period. It should be a year-round effort. Communication Should Be Ongoing Its natural to get caught up in the short periods of time during which employees become eligible for benefits. This could be within days of being hired, a year after hiring, or strictly during open enrollment, depending on a companys policies. But employees have general questions and concerns all year long, even when theyre not given access to employee benefits enrollment. They might want to know How to obtain information about the health care providers who participate in their health plansWhere to find out about out-of-pocket costs, annual deductible limits, and monthly rate changesWhat to do if they have a question about a medical bill or need help with a disputeHow to make changes to their health coverage if something new happens in their lives or careersIf they have specific coverage for certain health-related tests and proceduresWhen they should make changes or the deadlines by which they must enroll in certain types of wellness coverage Benefits Communication Best Practices These practices have been shown to produce great results when instituted in the workplace. A central web-based technology for employee benefits management Human resource managers used to be tasked with getting employees to fill out paper enrollment forms, then the forms were passed on to some unknown third-party for processing. No more. Information-rich benefits technology enables employees to enroll, find information, and seek live support. This is a great way to manage communications.Employ ee benefits communications in multiple formats Communication from the home office should be delivered in multiple formats. Send emails and text messages to remind employees about benefit enrollment periods and deadlines. Give them written documentation to read over and refer to as well. Educating employees with live and online presentations, as well as social media posts, are also effective formats in the modern age. The Bottom Line The only way an employee benefits communication strategy is going to be successful is if theres full buy-in and support from the upper management team. Bring all managers up to speed on employee benefits policies and ask them to keep their teams informed about changes and updates. Make sure they have access to the best resources to accomplish this. Get the executive team talking about benefits and how much value they bring to the workplace. Image Credit Kalim - Fotolia.com

Study finds that womens voices are lower now than they used to be

Study finds that womens voices are lower now than they used to beStudy finds that womens voices are lower now than they used to beIn the underrated film I Feel Pretty that came out this spring, Academy-award nominee Michelle Williams showed she has got comedic chops too when she played the role of a glamorous CEO of a beauty empire called LeClaire Cosmetics. Williams looks every bit the part as she is beautiful, fashionable, graceful and appealingly aloof but then she opens her mouth. Williams gave her character, Avery LeClaire, the voice of one that resembles a chipmunk and it was brilliant.Over the course of the film we start to see Avery unravel as she is put under major pressure by her grandmother (played by notoriously low-voiced Lauren Hutton) who started the company and in one stress-eating scene she confesses to Amy Schumers character, who has become her Jiminy Cricket in some ways, that she has tried everything (well really just voice lessons) to fix her high-pitched voice b ecause she knows it underwrites her commanding presence.Women speak at lower pitches todayThe problem seems to be that Avery was born in the wrong era. New research shows that womens voices today are significantly deeper than previous generations and that is because of roles shifting and power dynamics.Cecilia Pemberton at the University of South Australiastudied the voices of two groups of Australian womenbetween the ages of 1825 years old. They compared recordings of women speaking in 1945 with ones of women talking in the 1990s. It was found that the fundamental frequency had dropped by 23 Hz over those 50 years. The average womans voice they looked at went from 229 Hz to 206 Hz.This isnt surprising as a lower voice is unequivocally considered more dominating. Chimpanzees and frogs know this and do this and so do humans it seems. You can have the right body language, clothing and be as smart as a whip but if your voice resembles that of a muppet, people will automatically undercu t you. Perhaps womens voices are evolving this way as a survival of the fittest type of strategy.I Feel Pretty screenwriterMarc Silverstein said of Williams character, The voice was written and the part is done as written, but the voice was hers, Silverstein said. It was just written super high with a vocal fry, and kind of based on someone that she knows and I know. Just someone we know thats really successful and smart, but when they get up to talk, youre like, Whoa. Where did that come from? This is why we saw Margaret Thatcher take lessons to lower the pitch of her voice and she went on to win her election and become Prime Minister.Chris Delaney,a career coach and the author ofThe 73 Rules for Influencingthe Interview usingPsychology, NLP and Hypnotic Persuasion Techniques said in an interview, We have all heard that people form an opinionabout you in the first 5-10 minutes of meeting you, this is true but thetime frame is closer to 5-10 seconds. When using a baby voice or even w hen you have a baby face, people will feelan instinct to mother you, to protect you. This can be an advantage anddisadvantage. An advantage can be that you are protected after making acostly mistake at work, the natural instinct to protect and nurture a babyis projected on to your colleagues who will do anything to keep you safe. But what when you are ready for that promotion? Your colleagues andmanagers already have a prejudice about you they have stereotyped you as some who needs erleichterung from others. With this reputation, you will find ithard to succeed in any promotional interview. The Catch-22Interestingly it has also been found that voice pitches for women vary between countries. Women in the Netherlands tend to have deeper voices than those in Japan signifying how power is valued in certain countries versus others. However, before you go trying to speak lower, researcherJoey Cheng of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign told The BBC, While lower voices and other assertive behavior in general effectively signal and assert power and authority in women, as it does in men, it might also have the unintended effect of undermining how well liked they are. Ay theres the rub.

Conducting an Interview with Know-How

Conducting an Interview with Know-HowConducting an Interview with Know-HowConducting an Interview with Know-How Martin, author of Boost your Interview IQ (McGraw Hill)With so many people out of a job unterstellung days, the hiring process should be easy just pick the best candidate out of the bunch right? If only it was so.If you are feeling challenged by the pile of resumes that is quickly becoming a mountain whether virtual or paper copies you are not alone. Some of the pitfalls to look out for when you are in this overwhelming position can work against you. The result you end up picking someone just because they are not as bad as some of the others, instead of finding the piece of gold who will make your job easier by being the right person for the job. Here are some of the top mistakes made in the hiring process when conducting an bewerbungsgesprch.1. Judging By the CoverSome studies done have shown that the majority of decisions are made about a candidate in the first 30-60 second s. Thats pretty frightening when you consider how many wrong impressions people get in those first minutes of the interview.Even if you get a favorable impression in those first few minutes it is advised to give the person the benefit of the doubt and listen to what he or she has to say. Youd be surprised what you can discover by asking the right interview questions and carefully listening to the answers, while reading between the lines. If your instincts were correct from the beginning, then consider this a backup for your hiring process to make a more objective decision.2. Winging the InterviewThink about the last time you conducted an interview and how much preparation you did before the interview. If you prepared the questions and reviewed the resume in advance then you are head and shoulders above the majority. Most interviewers give a brief look at the candidates resume they are about to interview scanning it for anywhere from 30-60 seconds. What a waste. When you take the time b efore the interview to think about the job skills of your new hire and then compare your wish list against the persons qualifications you will be closer to hitting the mark.3. Biggest Mistake Talking too muchThere is a rule of thumb in how to interview that will assist you in getting the information you will need to make a savvy decision on a candidateThe candidate should talk 80% of the time the interviewer 20% of the time. One of the complaints heard from candidates is that they didnt get a chance to talk or to tell what they had to offer because the interviewer talked most of the time and didnt ask many interview questions. You can learn a lot more by listening than you can by talking.4. Asking Closed-Ended QuestionsOne of the purposes ofconducting aninterview is to find out as much as possible about the candidate by soliciting information from their past experience their past behavior. When you ask questions that can be answered in one or two words you are missing an opportunity to find out detailed information. You may have to ask three or four follow-up questions to reap the information you are seeking. An example of a closed-ended questionAre youOK with the idea of public speaking as part of the job?The candidate can answer the question with a Yes or a No answer and you will have missed the opportunity to find out more about what public speaking experience he or she has had.A question that will reap a great absprache more information is to ask a behavioral questionCan you tell me about a time when you spoke before a group as a part of your job and how it went? You are asking for a specific example of past behavior that will require the candidate to provide you with an example of how they behave.Remember past behavior is often an indicator of future success.5. Not Controlling the InterviewYou are in charge of the interview from start to finish. When you are prepared and ask probing questions, the interview will stay on track. If you are unprepared and move from subject to subject the interview can spin out of control. The end-result is your not knowing enough about the client to make an objective hiring decision.Dont let the interview go longer than needed. Cut to the chase and save yourself and the candidate time by collecting information that will assist you is a decision as to whether this person is the right person for the job.By following these few simple steps, your hiring process can be efficient and informative. You will find out more quickly whether this person has the qualities that you are looking for.Final tip be sure that you clarify what you are seeking in a candidate skills, abilities and personality traits. Doing so will undoubtedly improve your hiring outcome.Author BioCarole Martin is Americas best-known interview coach.
